Camera Wars – DSLR

The DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera class is currently the top tier in digital photography.  With interchangeable lenses, super high-resolution and complete control over settings, the DSLR really gives the user professional results.

The inner workings of an SLR (and now DSLR) have remained mostly unchanged for the last 50 years.  (If it ain’t broke…)  The basic idea behind the design is a hinged mirror that bounces light from the lens to the viewfinder (for framing).  When the trigger is pressed, the mirror flips out-of-the-way, exposing the film.  Hence the name, Single Lens Reflex.

There are a couple key points to think about when purchasing a DSLR.  First off, the Sensor size is going to determine how much image you can get into each shot.  Smaller sensors show less, effectively cropping the attainable size of your picture.  Go to a camera shop and try out different sizes to find which works best for you.

You’ll also want to consider things like shutter speed for continuous shooting, image stabilization systems, and the overall size and weight of the camera.

For a large purpose like this, it’s really best to get a feel for the camera in person at a local camera shop.  If you are taking the step into a serious hobby, make sure you plan ahead.  This investment will lead to others (lenses, cases, accessories, etc), so choose wisely.

We’d recommend giving the Canon 5D Mark II some serious consideration.  It’s a solid camera with a sturdy body and tons of features.
