Awesome Inventions of Yesteryear (part 3)

Cigarette holder with little umbrella covering the ember

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more kookie, the 1950’s bring us the Rainy Day Cigarette Holder!

The little umbrella is, let’s face it, adorable.  But wouldn’t it make more sense to just get yourself an umbrella (full-sized human umbrella) and smoke under that?  Don’t get me wrong, the guy in the pic looks super happy getting rained on.  Oh, and that happy gentleman is Robert L. Stern, president of Zues Corp.  I wonder what other technological marvels Zues Corp unleashed on the public?

Ingenuity, folks!

Awesome Inventions of Yesteryear (part 1)

Black n White Baby Cage - spooky

There have been a lot of truly foolish inventions since the dawn of man.  But none so loco as the baby cage.

As the name implies, the device is a cage.  For a baby.  Developed in 1937 for the members of the “Chelsea Boy Club,” the baby cage allowed apartment bound mothers to dangle their fragile children from windows for some fresh air.

Where are the follow-up interviews?  With the babies.  Those kids must have developed some serious trust issues.

Ingenuity, folks!

Can your smart phone spy snoop your emails?

iPhone with disguise glasses

A new study has concluded that your sweet, innocent iPhone could be listening in on your typing!

The basic premise is that the accelerometer can judge which keys you’re punching on your keyboard… so long as it’s on your desk.  Preliminary tests have returned an 80% success rate.  Keep that in mind the next time you’re posting a slanderous comment online.

Welcome the iPhone 4s

It’s officially official.  Apple is releasing a new iPhone… the iPhone 4s.  What, you were expecting an iPhone 5?  Sorry kids, you’ll have to wait until apple sees fit to release its rumor-laden (perhaps rumor-created) beast.  For now you’ll have to sate yourselves with the all new features of the 4s.  And here they are, in no particular order:

  1. Dual Core A5 chip (just like the iPad)
  2.  8MB Camera w improved “optics”  (That means there is an extra lens stuffed in the body)
  3. iCloud
  4. Siri Personal assistant (dope.  Seriously dope.)
  5. Back scratcher
  6. iOS5
  7. Toothbrush
  8. Breathalizer
  9. Scissors
  10. Spray Tan applicator
So the real question here is, where did those iPhone 5 cases come from?  And what about the alleged schematics?  Sneaky rumor mill created by Apple itself?  Well we’ve got the scoop!  In a super secret behind the scenes nixon-worthy in office recording, Mr Jobs is quoted as saying, “That’s it!  I’m tired of our shiz getting leaked to the blogging community!  You think you know what’s coming, nerds?  Huh?  Well now we’re not releasing the iPhone 5 for another year!  How’s bout them apples.”  This was followed by 4 and a half minutes of nervous laughter from unnamed apple employees.

Smart Phones could be 44% more energy efficient

The smart phone: an electricity guzzling time bandit.  Or is it?  The elves at the University of Michigan have divined a method for making smart phones upwards of 44% more energy-efficient!

The process is actually quite simple.  Basically, your little pocket monster is constantly looking for nearby cell towers and wifi.  So when your phone ‘locks,’ or goes into power save mode, it’s still doing a lot of work!  (Especially if you’re in a moving vehicle)

The U of M kids created a nifty new way of coding the hardware to operate in ‘idle mode’ at 1/16 the speed currently utilized to receive messages.  Basically, when idle, the phone stops sending and receiving, but instead ‘listens’ for updates / messages / booty calls.  The new process is called E-MiLi (Energy Minimizing Idle Listening).

While this won’t significantly alter the way you use your phone, it has the potential to drastically reduce the amount of battery used.    The process also has the potential to cut down the amount of radiation spit out from your phone!

Go! iPhone 5 production

09/09/2011 1 comment

Ok folks, it’s that time of year again.  Board up your windows and avoid the malls… the iPhone 5 is coming!  Yes, soon your friends and co workers will be camped out in front of your local apple retailer desperately trying to get their sweaty hands on a brand spankin new iPhone 5.

Reports suggest that October is the big release.  And maybe apple will be able to keep up with the demand this time.  Maybe.  Rumor has it that Foxconn is spitting out 150k iPhone 5s’ a day.  However, as iOS5 is still not complete, they must be sitting there waiting for the final system install before shipping.

Allegedly the new device will feature a whopping 4 inch wide screen and an 8mp camera.  Surely there will be a cavalcade of other features to get shoppers frothing at the mouths.  We’ll have to wait and see at the next conference.
